Working together with Project Manager and GMP Architect/Engineer. Design of process flow for post-extraction refining and for producing CBD/Dronabinol as high purity APIs within EU-GMP framework. Complete process flow conceptualization from fresh crop to end medicinal product within EU-GMP framework and requirements. Equipment selection, design, commissioning, qualification & validation. Process development, efficiency optimization, training and SOP creation focusing on Short-path distillation and Supercritical Fluid Chromatography process development for API (dronabinol) production.

Working onsite and remotely with the entire (Spanish-speaking) R&D team of a cannabis extraction company, listed in Canada stock exchange and operating in Colombia. Design of complete process flow from fresh crop to active ingredient (CBD isolate, THC-free tincture) within GMP framework. Equipment selection, design, commissioning, qualification & validation. Process development through experimental design, training and SOP creation. Implementation of experimental design (Box Benken) for optimization of processes including short-path distillation and extraction in order to optimize yields and efficiencies.

Working closely with company-subcontracted Ontario University Laboratory with experience on natural products and cannabis phytochemistry onsite and remotely (Loyalist college). Research & Development on cannabinoid extraction, isolation and profile characterization with advanced preparative (Centrifugal Partition Chromatography-CPC) and analytical techniques (UPLC, GC-MS). Focus on CBD, CBG, CBN, CBC. Purity optimization and efficiency improvement.
Project & Impact
Training of the R&D team of Scientists on Δ9-Tetrahydrocannabinol purification improvement through the introduction of novel chromatography technology (Centrifugal Partition Chromatography-CPC) onsite. Replacement of outdated and operationally expensive method (low pressure chromatography). Cost savings through solvent reduction and disposable stationary phase avoidance.

Working closely with the USA-based R&D/Industrialization team of a Contract Development and Manufacturing Organization (CDMO), both remotely and onsite. Process Development on Subcritical and Supercritical Fluid Extraction (SFE), refining (countercurrent column) and chromatographical purification (SFC) of natural, biotechnological and synthetic active ingredients, intended for various uses in functional foods, supplements, medical devices and medicines. In parallel, supporting specifically European focused business development, service engineering & technology transfer support.

Design of complete process flow from fresh crop to end medicinal product within QMS framework. R&D/optimization in cooperation with Academic and Industrial partners. Advising and supporting the founders of a specialty herbal active ingredient start-up, towards the conceptualization and development of a series of novel actives derived from the olive tree and products/by-products of the olive oil making industry. Focus on polyphenols such as hydroxytyrosol, oleocanthal, oleuropein, phytomelanin etc. Sourcing of raw materials for extraction, refining and formulation. Establishing and management of Academic cooperations with focus on R&D, phytochemical profiling of extracts and method development.

Scientific advisory of the French-speaking company management experts in order to modernize and upgrade the extraction and purification platform onsite and remotely (from biomass to CBD isolate). Cannabidiol (CBD) extraction and THC-remediation along with CBD purification through the introduction of supercritical fluid extraction (SFE), centrifugal partition chromatography (CPC) and flash chromatography, through working with well-established manufacturers and partners in Switzerland and France. Onsite conducting of R&D trials. Pilot phase trails, flow diagrams ad dimensioning. New laboratory conceptualization and related procurements.
